Know Rhymesââ¬Know Reasons
My parents are nerds.à I donââ¬â¢t mean they were nerds as kids and grew out of it; I mean my parents were nerds from the moment each was born, though their adolescence, and right into adulthood.à Today, my parents remain true to their heritage: they are full-fledged, adult nerds. As most people are aware, nerd hood requires a few supplies and traits: along with the requisite pocket protectors, the over-exuberance for all things academic, and thick glasses, both of my parents are bookworms.à Luckily, certain genetic traits skip a generation, and I can honestly say that I am not a nerd; however, I am a bookworm, and I am not ashamed to admit it because much of my life has been influenced by the things I have read. I grew up with Dr. Seuss.à My father used to spend time every week reading the latest Dr. Seuss book with me.à Heââ¬â¢d tuck me into bed, and then I read to him aloud as the story unfolded one rhyme and one intriguing illustration at a time.à My goal was not so much to get to the end, but to learn new words, and each new word I learned was marked by my father with a bright, yellow highlighter. In this way, the progress I made became more tangible, and for all I know, that habit of my fatherââ¬â¢s allowed me the freedom to read all of my books with a dictionary and a highlighter by my side and never to feel as if doing so was a waste of time or a burden: new word were an adventure, and I loved learning them.à I donââ¬â¢t recall developing a particular favorite Dr. Seuss book as a child, but as I got older, I began to get the urge to unpack the box of my highlighted books and relive a little of my youth. The box of Dr. Seuss books had been stored in the family shed, and the years had taken their toll.à The change in temperature had caused the books to warp and mold, but they had not gone completely to waste: at least one family of rodents had nested in the box, shredding the pages of my early education for their own progenyââ¬â¢s needs.à One lone book remained untouched: Horton Hears a Who, and as I opened this last book of my childhood and began to read, I was struck by the power of the story.à Hidden in the text was one of the most important lessons Iââ¬â¢ve ever learned: a single voice of the tiniest girl was strong enough to make a difference.à As hokey as it may sound, I leaned the degree to which an individual can impact the world that day as I read that book.à Perhaps I am a nerd. I wonââ¬â¢t waste time by detailing the degree to which I read during grade school, junior high school, and high school; I will only clarify that while I admit to being bookish, I was also an athlete, participated in student body, and had a social life.à I was, however, not done with Dr. Seuss. I hit a wall with Shakespeare, and I felt the burden of reading for the first time in my life.à While many students had grown accustomed to that wall, I had never dealt with it, so by the time it happened to me, the stakes were high: I was in college, and I wasnââ¬â¢t getting it. à I had never skipped a readingââ¬ânever worried about my English or literature courses. Suddenly, I was ready for a slug of the stuff Romeo had taken.à I did the only thing I could think of: looking for commiseration, I complained to my parents about how stupid Shakespeare was, pointed out that no one could really be sure heââ¬â¢d written his plays, and wondered out loud why anyone needed to read stuff thatââ¬â¢s written like that anyway. My father would have none of it, but he suggested to me that anyone who had grown up on Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein had no business complaining about or being confused by Shakespeare.à Like many messages delivered when one isnââ¬â¢t ready to receive them, the point my father had tried to make was lost on me for awhileââ¬âburied by the frustration of not having been appeased.à Several days later, I tried to give in to the notion that there might be something familiar in the rhythm and rhyme of Shakespeare if only Iââ¬â¢d do what my father had suggested: read it out loud and listenââ¬âreally listen. I struggled at first trying to work through the colloquial terms.à I fought to remember that the ends of a line of text didnââ¬â¢t necessarily equal the end of a sentence.à I battled with Shakespeareââ¬â¢s sentence structure trying to remember that it was rarely subject-verb-object.à It was like running through sand that was waist deep.à Until it wasnââ¬â¢t.à Suddenly, everything fell into place: it was like I had learned a foreign language.à The words made sense; the story began to unfold around me; I got it; I liked it.à The only thing I can compare it to is sitting in a theater watching a sub-titled movie: there is a point at which the reading becomes so automatic that it is no longer a conscious effort but automatic. à It was just like that. Later, I met the wall that was Henry James.à I was reading Portrait of a Lady, and I had spent far too much time trying to decipher the first scene of the text.à When I realized that James had spent over a page beating around the bush to say that three men were at tea, I wanted to scream.à I wanted to ask the guy why heââ¬â¢d wasted so much ink and so many words simply to point out to the audience that it was tea time, but instead of there being women there, there were menââ¬âbut I had a book to wade through, and Mr. James was long dead, so I moved on. Having figured out the context of the opening if the book, I went back and started anew, and I realized that I wanted to sit and talk to the man who had chosen such wonderfully descriptive wordsââ¬âa man who had taken such great care to spend the time to so completely describe the fact that three men were at tea.à I remember thinking to myself that if he were a painter, and he painted the way he wrote, that I would love his work like I loved Claude Monetââ¬â¢s Impression Sunrise.à Years later, when I began to read everything I could by and about Henry James, I had a private laugh over his affinity for paintersââ¬âMonet in particular. Having cracked Shakespeare and James, I was never again afraid of a bookââ¬â¢s language orà length.à I picked up Middlemarch and Tom Jones and Vanity Fair and loved each of them forà different reasons, but one day, I picked up Sherwood Andersonââ¬â¢s Winesburg, Ohio, and likeà Horton Hears a Who, I found a story that changed the way I viewed the world.à ââ¬Å"The Book of theà Grotesqueâ⬠made me think about truth, and the way in which each individual forms his or herà own truth and twists it to suite personal needs.à It made me consider that each personââ¬â¢sà quest for and claiming of truth can send ripples into the world, and these ideas changed me. Recently, I have discovered Flannery Oââ¬â¢Connor, and while I struggle with the racial issues that threaten to ruin her works for me, I feel the now-familiar tingle beginning that I have grown to recognize as the discovery and excitement that only a well-written book can bring me.à I may have to break down and buy a pocket protector just to use as a book mark. What about writing?à Well, if one day all of the things I have jotted down in hopes of emulating the people previously mentioned ever manages to make its way to a publisher, I will blame that on the books I have read and the people who wrote them.à I will speak of the fact that when I walk into a bookstore, I marvel at all of the people who have managed to get published and allow myself an instant to believe it might someday happen for me as well. As I pick my words and paint my own pictures, I wonder if I have it in me to write the thing that for the right person will make a differenceââ¬âthe thing that might one day be highlighted in bright yellowââ¬âthe page marked with a sticky note.à Maybe this year Iââ¬â¢ll try my hand at NaNoWriMo. Coke Wars Case Study
Coke Wars Case Analysis: Competition, Strategy, and Implications Webster University Summer 2012 INTRODUCTION The rivalry between Coca-Cola & Pepsi can be deemed as legendary, ââ¬Å"the top soft drink competitors in the world spend millions of dollars yearly to try and convince you that their version of soft drink is betterâ⬠(Dotson pg 1).Over the past century, it seems they have feuded over everything from who has superior taste, to the pursuit into space, and more recently over NASCAR and the social media race. Regardless of who is ahead in the competition, the battles between Coca-Cola & Pepsi demonstrate important strategic adaptations that the corporations must execute so as to thrive in the constantly changing realms of customer satisfaction, business environments and technology. This paper will: 1) review the strategic issues presented in the ââ¬Å"Coke Warsâ⬠case through the use of the Strategic Management Model as applied to both Coca-Cola & Pepsi; 2) highlight fundamental strategies & tactics so as to analyze the inherent competition between both corporations; and finally 3) discuss implications of concepts presented in the case for the middle manager so as to grasp lessons learned for future application.STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT MODEL (SMM) The text describes strategic management as ââ¬Å"the set of decisions and actions that result in the formulation and implementation of plans designed to achieve a companyââ¬â¢s objectivesâ⬠(Pearce, Robinson pg 3). With this definition in mind then, the Strategic Management Model can be considered as a very useful framework by which managers plan and implement business strategies.More importantly, in todayââ¬â¢s global business environment ââ¬Å"firms need perfect processes that respond to increases in the size and number of competing firms; to the expanded role of government as a buyer, seller, regulator, and competitor in the free-enterprise system; and to greater business involvement in int ernational tradeâ⬠(pg 3). Furthermore, while ââ¬Å"businesses vary in the processes they use to formulate and direct their strategic management activitiesâ⬠¦the basic components of the models used to analyze strategic management operations is similarâ⬠(pg 9).In reaction to internal and external environmental business/economic pressures Coca-Cola & Pepsi have manipulated the SMM in various ways so as to remain viable/powerful competitors in their respective industry. Coca-Cola Model Application According to the Coca-Cola Companyââ¬â¢s Annual Report 2011, they are ââ¬Å"the worldââ¬â¢s largest beverage companyâ⬠¦with more than 500 nonalcoholic beverage brandsâ⬠¦own the worldââ¬â¢s top five nonalcoholic sparkling beverage brandsâ⬠¦products bearing their trademarks, have been sold in the United States since 1886, and are now sold in more than 200 countriesâ⬠(pg 1).Coca-Colaââ¬â¢s report to shareholders reveals that they are continuing to r emain competitive in the beverage/snack industry due to a multitude of intelligent strategic decisions. When analyzing Coca-Cola from the Strategic Management Model perspective one can determine that while the internal/external environment will always remain unpredictable, the development of viable plans/processes can assist a corporation in remaining flexible and responsive to necessary change. Coca-Colaââ¬â¢s Mission is ââ¬Å"to refresh the worldâ⬠¦inspire moments of optimism and happinessâ⬠¦create value and make a differenceâ⬠(Annual Report Mission, Vision, and Values).Their current goals are ââ¬Å"to use company assetsââ¬âbrands, financial strength, unrivaled distribution system, global reach and the talent and strong commitment of management and associatesââ¬âto become more competitive and to accelerate growth in a manner that creates value for shareholdersâ⬠(pg 1). Overall, the mission statement is quite powerful and accurately ââ¬Å"describes the companyââ¬â¢s product, market, and technological areas of emphasis in a way that reflects the values and priorities of the strategic decision makersâ⬠(Pearce, Robinson pg 10).With respect to Internal Analysis, the corporation has identified its ââ¬Å"operating structure as the basis for financial reportingâ⬠and is broken down into 7 different operating groups (Annual Report pg 2). The method for financial reporting is important because this is where/how investors and executives alike assess the ââ¬Å"quantity and quality of the companyââ¬â¢s financial, human, and physical resourcesâ⬠¦and contrasts companyââ¬â¢s past successes and traditional concerns with the companyââ¬â¢s current capabilitiesâ⬠(Pearce Robinson pg 11).Coca-Colaââ¬â¢s Annual Report is well designed, informative, and relatively easy to read as well. An important internal analysis factor of note is that of leadershipââ¬âCEOââ¬â¢s and Board members alike must adequately analyze the direction/vision of the corporation so as to not become ââ¬Å"fixated upon past gloriesâ⬠¦instead embracing new opportunitiesâ⬠(Ward pg 3). The External Environment that the company experiences is one full of pressures to include: extreme competition, distribution system management challenges, and social responsibility struggles.Additional competitive factors include those of ââ¬Å"but not limited to pricing, advertising, sales promotion programs, product innovation, increased efficiency in production techniques, the introduction of new packaging, new vending and dispensing equipment, and brand/trademark development & protectionâ⬠(Annual Report pg 8). Concerning Strategic Analysis and Choice, Coca-Cola can be considered as ââ¬Å"effective at building sustainable competitive advantage based on key value chain activities and capabilitiesâ⬠(PR pg 11) and have identified their bottling operations as equity method investments. The ââ¬Å"investments a re intended to result in increases in the unit case volume, net revenues and profits at the bottler level, which in turn generate increased concentrate sales for the company concentrate and syrup businessâ⬠¦when this occurs both the corporation and the bottling partners benefit from long-term growth in volume, improved cash flows, and increased shareholder valueâ⬠(AR pg 7). The Long-Term Objectives should reflect areas such as ââ¬Å"profitability, return on investment, competitive position, technological leadership, productivity, employee relations, public responsibility, and employee developmentâ⬠(PR pg 11).According to the provided case materials, the company has strong goals for the future and ââ¬Å"has transformed into a more innovative, risk taking companyâ⬠¦becoming more adventurous in responding to changes in the beverage market for healthier alternativesâ⬠so as to respond to customer desires, technology, and competitive environment (Ward pg 3). Co ca-Colaââ¬â¢s Generic Strategy is that of differentiation, making their products superior to those in the industry, ââ¬Å"by stressing the attribute above other product qualities, the firm attempts to build customer loyaltyâ⬠(PR pg 158).Their Grand Strategies can be defined as concentrated growth, market development, product development, innovation, vertical integration, turnaround, and strategic alliances. Coca-Cola is increasingly globalized and their Generic and Grand strategies seem to be creating valuable success for the corporation ââ¬Å"and is transforming into a more innovative, risk-taking companyâ⬠(Ward pg 2). Short Term Objectives for the corporation involve effective marketing strategies that appeal to existing customers and new clientele as well. They have embraced social media, the health craze and more recently the 2012 Olympics to successfully reach an increasingly global audience. In fact, ââ¬Å"Cokeââ¬â¢s strongest performance has been experienc ed in emerging markets in Russia, China, and Brazil, and has also improved its position in North America and Europe as wellâ⬠(pg 3). Action Plans are incorporated and employed globally by executives and managers alike at Coca-Cola and those plans are laid out in the Annual Report.Everything from distribution systems, bottling methods, responses to competition, raw material acquisition, and investment plans are outlined which provides exact methods by which the corporation plans to remain a viable player in the industry. In sum they plan to ââ¬Å"use the Companyââ¬â¢s assetsââ¬âbrands, financial strength, unrivaled distribution system, global reach and the talent and strong commitment of management and associatesââ¬âto become more competitive and to accelerate growth in a manner that creates value for shareholdersâ⬠(Annual Report 2011 pg 1).Functional Tactics used by the corporation to achieve short term goals and attain competitive advantage include adoption of marketing strategies that appeal to not only health conscious customers but to a global audience. In fact ââ¬Å"Coke is bringing out mid-calorie versions of some of its brands like Sprite and Fanta, and is teaming up with Grammy award winner Mark Ronson for its 2012 London Olympics anthemâ⬠(Hernandez pg 1).Additionally, Coke ââ¬Å"continues to focus on selling soft drinks globally and even vows to rebuild Coke sales in the US marketâ⬠through focusing upon non-carbonated sports drinks such as PowerAde, Aquarius, and Fuze (Dââ¬â¢Altoro pg 2). Coca-Cola absolutely has Policies That Empower Action as demonstrated by the information contained in the Annual Report and via their website: ââ¬Å"Work Smart: Act with urgency, remain responsive to change have the courage to change course when needed, remain constructively discontent, and work efficientlyâ⬠(Coca-Cola Website pg 2).The ââ¬Å"work smartâ⬠mentality allows for decisions to be made whenever possible at the lowest level of the corporation. Organizational Structure is segmented into the following areas: ââ¬Å"Eurasia and Africa, Europe, Latin America, North America, Pacific, Bottling Investments, and Corporateâ⬠(Annual Report pg 2). Coke is predominantly organized into an international area structure that allows for operational efficiency and regional competitiveness. However Coca-Cola faces the additional struggle of remaining socially responsible to societies and environments in which it operates and has faced several legal implications with respect to human rights issues in South American Bottling plants (FRONTLINE). Nonetheless Coca-Cola reiterates that ââ¬Å"despite the volatile environment, the company and its bottling partners have maintained operations and worked to provide safe, stable economic opportunitiesâ⬠for the people in nations that they operate in (FRONTLINE).Strategic Control and Continuous Improvement is facilitated by Coca-Colaââ¬â¢s organizat ional structure, leadership, and 2020 Vision campaign. In fact their website reiterates that in order ââ¬Å"to continue to thrive as a business over the next 10 years and beyond, they must look ahead, understand the trends and forces that will shape their business in the future and move swiftly to prepare for what is to comeâ⬠(Coca-Cola Website). This statement reveals that the corporation is committed to ââ¬Å"detecting changes and making necessary adjustmentsâ⬠¦in strategy that allows their organization to respond more proactively and timely to rapid developments thatâ⬠inherently affect ultimate success. Pepsi Model Application Much like Coca-Cola, Pepsiââ¬â¢s Mission statement is very clear, concise and purposeful ââ¬Å"Captivate consumers with the worldââ¬â¢s most loved and best-tasting convenient foods and beverages through the use of its strengths: Brand Image, Positioning, Innovation, Distribution Capabilities, Productivity Focus, Human Capital and Pur poseful Performanceâ⬠(Pepsi Annual Report).Pepsi also reiterates that being socially responsible is of utmost importance and ââ¬Å"commitment to do right for the business by doing right for people & the planetâ⬠effectively creates a ââ¬Å"catalyst for business growth and innovation, enabling them to be financially successful and globally responsibleâ⬠(Pepsi Annual Report). As covered in the Letter to Shareholders the CEO, Indra Nooyi, reveals the Internal Analysis of Pepsi Co. to be that of ââ¬Å"strong progress and on a core basis net revenue was up 14% for 2011â⬠(Pepsi Annual Report). This success was due to improvements n the following areas: ââ¬Å"investment in emerging markets, brand management, research and development, differentiation, efficiency and global operating structure to fully leverage the scale of PepsiCoâ⬠(Pepsi Annual Report). PepsiCo is most certainly proud of their improvements and strategic focus but also realizes that the crea tion of ââ¬Å"an adaptive team and cultureââ¬âone that can continually renew itself and thrive on changeâ⬠¦performing today while transforming for tomorrowâ⬠is necessary for success into the future and believes that their ââ¬Å"best days are yet to comeâ⬠(Pepsi Annual Report).Pepsi experiences similar External Environmental conditions to that of Coca-Cola. Intense competition, globalized marketplace, social responsibility, and economic conditions all affect the strategies that PepsiCo decides to implement. Additionally, Pepsi must allocate its attention to not only the beverage industry but to their global snack line as well; which while designed to be complimentary can prove to have possible negative effects when considering the volatility of each of these industries. The Strategic Analysis and Choice, that Pepsi has selected, much like Coca-Cola can be considered as effective. In order to gain a sustainable competitive advantage Pepsi is ââ¬Å"pursuing specif ic strategic investment and productivity initiatives to build a stronger, more successful company through global brands, innovation, and advertising/marketing campaignsâ⬠(Pepsi Annual Report). As mentioned earlier, the following areas are of importance in Pepsiââ¬â¢s strategic analysis/choice: Brand Image, Positioning, Innovation, Distribution Channels, Productivity, Human Capital and Social Responsibility. As the report outlines, Pepsiââ¬â¢s Long-Term Objectives support increasingly globalized operations, global brand recognition, public responsibility, and industry leadership in beverages and snacks. In fact Pepsi was the first to realize the customer shift to healthier lifestyles and responded before Coke ââ¬Å"to changes in the beverage market as consumers shifted from fizzy drinks to healthier alternativesâ⬠(Ward pg 3). Furthermore ââ¬Å"Pepsiââ¬â¢s new strategy: Better-For-You Productsââ¬âcomes down to health concerns and being socially responsible wh ereâ⬠¦lifestyles have changedâ⬠¦and Pepsi has modified its productsâ⬠(Dââ¬â¢Altorio pg 1).Pepsiââ¬â¢s Generic Strategy, like that of Coca-Cola, is that of differentiation. This is why the Cola Wars have been so pervasive and prevalentââ¬âthey both are striving to make their products superior to those of the competition. Their Grand Strategies can also be identified as concentrated growth, market development, product development, innovation, vertical integration, turnaround, joint ventures, divestiture and strategic alliances.Additionally, Pepsi is becoming more globalized in nature and their Generic and Grand strategies reflect this: ââ¬Å"they are a $66 billion global powerhouse focused upon two complementary businesses with attractive growth margins and returnsââ¬âglobal snacks and global beveragesâ⬠to achieve global nutrition achievements worldwideâ⬠(Pepsi Annual Report). Pepsiââ¬â¢s Short Term Objectives are focused upon investment in their global brand management and streamlining distribution methods so as to attain measurable efficiency. In fact last year three brandsââ¬âDiet Mountain Dew, Brisk and Starbucks ready to drink beveragesââ¬âhad each grown to more than $1 billion in annual retail sales, expanding PepsiCoââ¬â¢s portfolio of billion dollar brands to 22â⬠(Pepsi Annual Report). Their distribution methods remain largely ââ¬Å"unmatchedâ⬠¦and in 2011 they successfully changed distribution for Gatorade products in the US in the convenience and other channels from a warehouse-delivered-go-to-market system to DSD, in order to more efficiently serve customersâ⬠(Pepsi Annual Report).Much like Coca-Cola, Pepsiââ¬â¢s Action Plans are employed globally and specific intentions are revealed in the Annual Report. The difference is however that Pepsi has two industries upon which it has to contend with: beverages AND snacks. Their action plan for 2012 and beyond stresses five imperatives : ââ¬Å"1) build and extend macro-snacks portfolio globally; 2) sustainably and profitably grow its beverage business worldwide; 3) build and expand the nutrition business; 4) increase and capitalize on the high coincidence of snack and beverage consumption; 5) ensure prudent and responsible financial managementâ⬠(Pepsi Annual Report).Functional Tactics used by Pepsi so as to achieve its short term goals/competitive advantage include marketing strategies and socially responsible business practices that reach a more global audience. Adopting the responsibility of ââ¬Å"Global Nutritionâ⬠demonstrates Pepsiââ¬â¢s commitment to a healthier population and have ââ¬Å"developed new strategies with new soft drinks which will catch on to part of the public that is the new health crazeâ⬠(Dotson pg 2).The development of products such as Gatorade G2, which is low in calorie than the regular sports drinks, and Propel demonstrate that Pepsi in focused upon innovative produ cts that cater to the health conscious customer needs/wants. As revealed by the Annual Report, Policies That Empower Action for Pepsi begins with the ââ¬Å"Power of One conceptâ⬠¦operating as one company to connect with consumerâ⬠¦innovating globally, delighting locallyâ⬠¦ and performance with purposeâ⬠to achieve sustained growth and success. While Pepsi has many difficulties to confront with respect to competition, multiple industries, and internal/external economic stressors; they are continuing to adapt to their environments and reiterate that ââ¬Å"the challenge to renew a successful company is one that they embraceâ⬠(Pepsi Annual Report). Pepsiââ¬â¢s Organizational Structure is segmented ââ¬Å"into four business units: 1) PepsiCo Americaââ¬â¢s Foods; 2) PepsiCo Americaââ¬â¢s Beverages; 3) PepsiCo Europe; 4) PepsiCo Asia, Middle East, Africaâ⬠(Pepsi Annual Report).Pepsiââ¬â¢s structure allows for certain control and efficiencies both n ationally and globally in the beverage and snack industries. In addition Pepsi has standardized the reportable segments of each business so as to allow for appropriate analysis and competitive advantage measurement by region. With respect to Strategic Control and Continuous Improvement, Pepsiââ¬â¢s organizational structure, leadership, and Power of Pepsi campaign reveal that the corporation is committed to remaining a sustainable competitor well into the future.Furthermore, ââ¬Å"as they look ahead they are positioning their company for sustainable growth by building its brands around the globe, bringing innovative products to the marketplace, capitalizing on the coincidence of consumption of snacks and beverages, unleashing the full potential of its global scale and ensuring that PepsiCo continues to be a best place to workâ⬠embodies ways in which Strategic Control and Continuous Improvement are going to be accomplished. ANALYSIS & IMPLICATIONS FOR MIDDLE MANAGERSThe stra tegic models that each corporation adopts are similar but produce different levels of success for each organization. Both Coke and Pepsi have adopted aggressive marketing strategies and have struggled amongst one another to develop superior products and attain customer share maximization. Competition, while at times can be frustrating for the organization, in this case has allowed for the creation of better products and increasingly globalized operations resulting in inherent successes for both organizations. The Cola-Wars have been existent for quite a while, but as this point in time it can be said that Coca-Cola is the leader in the beverage industry segment ââ¬Å"Pepsi was knocked into third place behind Coca-Cola and Diet Cokeâ⬠¦Coca-Cola sold 1. 6 billion cases of regular soda and 927 million cases of diet soda, while Pepsi sold only 892 million casesâ⬠(WIKIPEDIA). However, Pepsi is still remaining competitive globally through the realization that there are other ind ustries upon which to capitalize and ensure sustainability into the future. In fact, ââ¬Å"as far as Pepsi is concerned the cola wars are over and needs to focus on convincing investors that it has the right focus in the new health kickâ⬠(Dââ¬â¢Altorio pg 2). While Pepsi is focusing upon ââ¬Å"Global Nutritionâ⬠they still need to realize that ââ¬Å"carbonated beverages still produce much of the companyââ¬â¢s sales and are still a key to Pepsiââ¬â¢s financial healthâ⬠(Dââ¬â¢Altorio).Into the future both Coca-Cola and Pepsi will prove to be viable competitors as revealed by their strategies/mission statements contained in their Annual Reports. The real key however, will be whether consumer demand remains in the carbonated beverage industryâ⬠¦if the tides somehow change, Pepsi will emerge as the victor due to their diversification strategyâ⬠¦one that has crossed channels and decided to create advantages with both beverages and snacks. The Cola War s bring up important implications for middle managers in the form of strategic analysis, implementation, and adaptation. Organizational success depends ultimately upon the ability of the organization to connect with consumers by providing an array of options so as to meet consumer desires, needs and lifestyles and these principles are largely motivated by corporate leadership and direction.Furthermore, the talent of employees must be empowered by management so as to execute goals and objectives effectively. A corporationsââ¬â¢ assets ââ¬âbrands, financial prowess, distribution systems, global influence and the talents of employees must be effectively employed so as to become more competitive and to influence accelerated growth in manners that create value for customers, shareholders, and the company itself. CONCLUSIONThe Coca-Cola/Pepsi ââ¬Å"conflict has raged on for decadesâ⬠and has even been dubbed as the ââ¬Å"Battle of the Centuryâ⬠but has revealed in the p rocess two corporations that have been successful in adopting strategies and processes so as to survive in the constantly changing, volatile business and economic environments representative of the current times. Coca-Cola and Pepsi will continue to face challenges into the future in the realms of economics, technology, and an increasingly globalized business environment. In effect, the corporation that is able to effectively exploit the new social media front of marketing strategy into the future will most likely end up as the frontrunner in most any industryâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Coke and Pepsi are amongst a multitude of companies buying into social mediaââ¬â¢s ability to strengthen their brandsâ⬠¦consumers are 55% more likely to recall ads that include social media components than non-social adsâ⬠¦consumers today are incredibly empowered and what used to work to get their attention now needs a bit more thoughtfulnessâ⬠(USA TODAY).This paper: 1) reviewed the strategic issue s presented in the ââ¬Å"Coke Warsâ⬠case through the use of the Strategic Management Model as applied to both Coca-Cola & Pepsi; 2) highlighted fundamental strategies & tactics so as to analyze the inherent competition between both corporations; and finally 3) discussed implications of concepts presented in the case for the middle manager so as to grasp lessons learned for future application. Both Coca-Cola and Pepsi are on the right track as far as determining appropriate strategies to thrive in the environments in which they operate but the challenge into the future will be the appropriate analysis and adaptability in which to adequately respond to customer needs, economies of scale, and the dynamic business environment. A View from the Bridge by Arthur Miller Essay
I am going to look at Arthur Millerââ¬â¢s play; set in the 1950ââ¬â¢s when social and cultural ideas were very different from today. There was often immigration to America especially from Italy as there was a lot of unemployment and poverty there. People immigrated to America from Italy due to there being more employment opportunities and a better quality of life there; they hoped to earn money to send back to their family still in Italy. The people that organised their immigration would find them jobs so there was a high chance of them being employed and being able to support themselves and their family. In Italian society people tended to mind their own business and keep to themselves, although the honour of the family name was very important. Family structures and connections were also very important. Families would normally put their close family first before anything else, then their wider family and then their friends. This meant that if a member or members of their family were immigrating, they would do as much as possible to help them and take them in. Eddieââ¬â¢s family were like this as they took in Marco and Rodolpho, their wider family, who were immigrating to America and looked after them. By this scene, Catherine and Rodolpho have already planned to get married and Eddie has decided he doesnââ¬â¢t want them to. He has suggested that Rodolpho only wants to marry Catherine so he can get an American passport and implies that Rodolpho is gay. He raises objections and, although Catherine trusts Eddie, she doesnââ¬â¢t know whose side she should be on. This makes the audience wonder for themselves. They donââ¬â¢t know who they should be trusting and whether Rodolpho is gay or just wants to marry Catherine so he can get an American passport. All this time the phone box is softy lit, like a dark cloud that is always hanging over the play, because it is an option that Eddie could take and the audience wonder whether at some point he will. This creates dramatic suspense because the audience are not sure what is going to happen but they also have an idea that the phone box will take a big part in the play. Act two starts with the lighting focused on Alfieri, illuminating him as he tells the story to the audience. He is setting the scene for act two referring to trade practises that are going on at that time: ââ¬Å"a case of Scotch whiskey slipped from a net while being unloaded ââ¬â as a case of Scotch whisky is inclined to do on the twenty-third of December on Pier Forty-oneââ¬â¢. He then goes on to explain that Catherine and Rodolpho are alone together for the first time. This causes the audience to feel suspense because Alfieri has used dramatic irony so they anticipate that something will happen between them but they donââ¬â¢t know what. The lighting then rises on Catherine so the focus is now on her. Rodolpho is watching her, as the audience are, showing that he enjoys being in close proximity to her. They start to talk and, although the talk starts normally, it seems to get more dramatic as it goes along. At the beginning of the conversation the audience and Rodolpho can see that Catherine is bothered about something and we want to know what she is worried about. From the text you can see she is feeling insecure: ââ¬ËShe looks at him. She seems withdrawnââ¬â¢. Catherine starts to test Rodolpho about whether he only wants to marry her to get an American pasport, which causes the audience to feel dramatic tension. At first Rodolpho takes it as a joke but then begins to see Catherine is being serious and he becomes confused and worried: ââ¬ËRodolpho [his smile vanishing]: When? Catherine: Wellâ⬠¦ when we get married. Rodolpho [astonished]: You want to be an Italian?ââ¬â¢ Through this part of the conversation Catherine and Rodolpho are both still until Rodolpho crosses to the rocker. This not only causes tension because of the sudden movement on stage but also because the rocker is the chair that Eddie sits in as head of the family. Rodolpho then starts talking to Catherine seriously and he becomes exasperated: ââ¬ËThereââ¬â¢s nothing! Nothing, nothing, nothing. Now tell me what youââ¬â¢re talking about.ââ¬â¢ This shows he is confused and bothered by what Catherine is saying and the tension is rising. He repeats ââ¬Ënothing, nothing, nothingââ¬â¢ showing emphasis and his Italian way of speaking. As this conversation continues the characters are developing and you can see them at different emotional levels. At this point there is a slight awkward pause as if the characters donââ¬â¢t know what to do or say and the audience feel tension because they donââ¬â¢t know what is going to happen next. It then becomes more intimate as Rodolpho steps closer to Catherine and encourages her to marry him: ââ¬ËOnce I am a citizen I could work anywhere and I would find better jobs and we would have a house, Catherineââ¬â¢. A View From the Bridge by Arthur Miller Essay In Arthur Millerââ¬â¢s play, ââ¬Å"A View From The Bridgeâ⬠the character of Alfieri is a very important piece of the play. He leads many different roles throughout the play, and is a very useful tool for letting the audience know what they need to do. In this essay, I will be examining the many different roles of Alfieri during the play, and examining what the effects are of these roles on the play, the other characters and the audience. I will also be looking briefly at the background of where the play is set, and also be looking briefly at the author, Arthur Miller. Arthur Miller was born in 1915, in Manhattan, New York. In his early years his family were pretty well off, but when the economic depression hit America in 1929, him and his family lost a lot of money and security. They had to move to a much poorer area of New York called Brooklyn. When Arthur Miller eventually left school at 17, he didnââ¬â¢t have enough money or the right qualifications to enter University, and so he tried out a variety of jobs. His many jobs included a waiter, a lorry driver, a crooner on a local radio station and a shipping clerk. He saved all his money, and in 1934 was accepted into Michigan University. He won three awards for playwriting, but was still unemployed when he graduated four years later. During the Second World War, Miller was unable to complete military service due to an old injury he gained, and so instead did manual work at shipyards and some freelance radio scriptwriting. He enjoyed writing plays for live theatre, and his first play, ââ¬Å"The Man Who Had All The Luck,â⬠was first performed in 1949 at Broadway. It later went onto win the ââ¬Å"Theatre Guild National Prize. â⬠His next play, ââ¬Å"All My Sons,â⬠won the New York Drama Criticsââ¬â¢ Circle Award. His two most successful plays, ââ¬Å"Death Of A Salesmanâ⬠and ââ¬Å"The Crucibleâ⬠soon followed. He later went onto write the play I am studying: ââ¬Å"A View From The Bridge. â⬠The play is set in Red Hook ââ¬â a slum next to Brooklyn Bridge, New York. The neighbourhood is very rough, and everybody their looks after themselves primarily and their families. Law and Order are not welcome there, and Lawyers and Priests are generally untrusted people. The bay next to Brooklyn Bridge was a favourite place for immigrants to illegally enter the U. S. A. Between 1820 and 1920, migration to the U. S. A was one of the biggest transportation of people in human history. In those 100 years, more than four million Italians went over to live there, hoping to leave behind the poverty and bad times from where they had previously lived, which in most cases was the South of Italy and Sicily. They migrated because they believed America could offer them more opportunities (including work) than their native land ever could. However, life often wasnââ¬â¢t how they thought it would be. The immigrants were often so desperate for work that employers exploited them, by paying them the bare minimum they could. The jobs themselves were all hard manual labour, which would help America to increase its wealth and power. The immigrants found themselves living in the worst and cheapest housing around, but still thought they were better off in America than they would have been back in Italy or Sicily. Indeed, many Americans distrusted Italians, and believed them to be dangerous and violent. It is this idea of immigrants illegally entering the U. S. A that provides the plot for ââ¬Å"A View From The Bridge. â⬠The play is based around Eddie Carbone, a longshoreman, his wife Beatrice, and Eddieââ¬â¢s niece, Catherine. Eddie is very overly protective of Catherine, and doesnââ¬â¢t really want to let her grow up. Beatriceââ¬â¢s cousins, Marco and Rodolpho, have just entered the U. S. A illegally from Sicily. Eddie and Beatrice agree to hide the cousins in their house. Rodolpho and Catherine become very good friends. Eddie becomes very suspicious of Rodolpho ââ¬â he accuses him of being gay and only wanting to marry Catherine so he can be a legal citizen of the U.S. A. Eddie tries to warn Catherine of his beliefs about Rodolpho, but she refuses to believe a word of it. Beatrice meanwhile, wants Catherine to grow up and so encourages her to marry Rodolpho. Eddie becomes more and more jealous and angry about the amount of time Catherine and Rodolpho spend together. He visits the local lawyer, Alfieri, and asks him if there is any way he can get rid of Rodolpho legally. Alfieri informs him that there is nothing he can do, and that he should just let Catherine go. The situation starts to grow worse and worse. One night, Eddie comes home drunk. He desperately tries once more to split up Catherine and Rodolpho, but he once again fails. After kissing Catherine and then Rodolpho, Eddie goes to visit Alfieri again. Alfieri once again advises Eddie to just let go of Catherine, but Eddie canââ¬â¢t do it. Instead, he calls the Immigration Bureau and reports Marco and Rodolphoââ¬â¢s illegal entry to the U. S. A. The Immigration Bureau come and arrest Marco and Rodolpho, and after a big fight in the street, Marco spits in Eddieââ¬â¢s face (a huge insult). Alfieri pays bail for the two cousins and then arranges the wedding of Catherine and Rodolpho for the following day. Eddie is furious that Marco spat in his face, and so is desperate for revenge. Marco returns to the house angry for his own revenge, when Eddie turns a knife on Marco. Marco manages to turn the knife around and stab Eddie- who then dies of his injuries. However, it is the character of Alfieri that I will now be focusing on. Alfieri is the first character we meet in the play, which therefore means that everything he says must capture the attention of the audience immediately. In this first opening speech of his, he acts like a special kind of narrator; a character who is filling us in on a brief background of the setting, and setting the scene for the rest of the play. He appears at first walking along the road outside Eddieââ¬â¢s house, which is where the majority of the play is set. He informs the audience about the neighbourhood where the play is set, and tells them that this particular neighbourhood has no place for law and order: ââ¬Å"A lawyer means the law, and in Sicily, from where their fathers came, the law has not been a friendly idea since the Greeks were beaten. ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"A View From the Bridgeâ⬠by Arthur Miller Essay Wikipedia says honour is the concept of a direct relation between oneââ¬â¢s virtues (or ââ¬Å"valuesâ⬠) and their status within society and that justice is the ideal, morally correct state of things and persons. Honour and justice are in fact the two main issues surrounding Arthur Millers A View from the Bridge. We can see these two elements right at the start of the play, with the story of Vinny Bolzano: the boy who betrayed his family and lost his honour within it. Vinny is in fact the perfect example of the connection between justice and love:â⬠The family had an uncle that they were hidinââ¬â¢ in the house, and he snitched to the Immigration [] he had five brothers and the old father. And they grabbed him in the kitchen and pulled him down the stairs ââ¬â three flights his head was bouncinââ¬â¢ like a coconut. And they spit on him in the street, his own father and his brothers. The whole neighbourhood was crying.â⬠(p.13-15)The importance of honour in this play prevails the law, creating a connection with respect: to be honourable is to be respected. If you do anything dishonourable, you lose respect. That is why Marco and Eddie are so keen to protect their names and reach a ââ¬Ëjustââ¬â¢ conclusion. Codes of honour bind families and the whole neighbourhood with a sense of community. Everyone should look out for one another, to betray someone is the most dishonourable action imaginable. The next part where we see clear evidence of the importance of honour in the Red Hook community is when Eddie tells Beatrice, ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s an honour, B. I mean it.â⬠(p..) when discussing the imminent arrival of the cousins in America. Here Eddie is saying he is honoured of letting Beatrices cousins sleep in his house because he knows they would do the same to him. This is a typical immigrant feeling because here Eddie is probably remembering when he too had come to America. Also, already from this point in the story we can see that his feelings for his Italian traditions overcome the American Law because even if Eddie knows the consequences of hosting two illegal immigrants in his house, he thinks about how he is honoured about it. Another evidence of honour in this play is the fact that Eddie finds it impossible to admit his love for Catherine is because he knows how dishonourable it is:ALFIERI: She wants to get married, Eddie. She cant marry you, can she?EDDIE: What are you talkin about, marry me! I dont know what the hell youre talking about!Because of how horrible his feelings seem to him are and how he will be dishonoured by them, he cannot accept them. He cannot accept them because it is not morally and socially correct to fall in love with your niece so this gives us an idea of injustice, of the unjust world we live in, where what Eddie has done it is not acceptable. Alfieri warns Eddie that he will lose the respect of the neighbourhood if he betrays the brothers. ââ¬Å"You wonââ¬â¢t have a friend in the world, Eddie!â⬠(p.49). It is significant that a lawyer (who we would expect to follow the law) is encouraging Eddie to do something illegal by continuing to keep the brothers hidden, obviously against his own interest. This, again, even in Alfieri, shows us how honour prevails to the law: Eddie will lose his honour if he reports Rodolfo and Marco to the immigration authorities. Marco believes the only honourable course is to punish Eddie when Eddie betrayed the brothers. Alfieri tries to persuade him otherwise: ââ¬Å"To promise not to kill is not dishonourableâ⬠(p.59), but Marcos ignorance towards the American law and his sentiments of honour vanquish any fear about breaking the promise he makes to Alfieri. In fact, Marco had given Alfieri his word that he would not harm Eddie, but does so clearly, showing once again that honour is more important than breaking the law. Here, the theme of justice rises once more: Marco finds it wrongful that Eddie can escape punishment and he cannot, making his urge for avenge even stronger. Eddie, however, blindly refuses to believe that he has done anything wrong. He desperately wants to get back his good name after Marcoââ¬â¢s accusations caused the neighbourhood to turn away from him: Marcoââ¬â¢s got my name ââ¬â and you run tell him, kid, that heââ¬â¢s gonna give it back to me in front of this neighbourhood, or we have it out.(p.62). The problem is that Marco wants the same thing as Eddie: respect, which is once again connected to honour, they both want apologies from each other which they shall never obtain. The final scene of A View from the Bridge is where Eddie is killed by Marco. One can reflect a lifetime to understand whether this ending is just or not. What we can say is that in the end, natural justice happens. Natural because what has happened is what had to happen: if Eddie wouldnt have died he would have been dishonoured for the rest of his life, just like Vinny Bolzano. I believe his death was chosen by Miller as a simpler way of resolving his problems which would have continued if he would have survived the fight with Marco: with Eddies death, his and everyones travails died too. Wyeth vs. Levine court case Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Wyeth vs. Levine court case - Research Paper Example This began in April, 2000 when the complainant suffered from nausea that was reportedly caused by a migraine headache. She decided to seek medical treatment from a health clinic. Here, she was injected two doses of phenergan, a drug that is manufactured by Wyeth. During the first administration, the drug was given through intramuscular injection. This according to the label, this was the most preferable method. However, her nausea persisted and to counter this, she was given another dose through IV push. In this, drugs are administered directly into the patientââ¬â¢s vein in a bid to promote fast relief. Accidentally, it was administered into Levineââ¬â¢s vein and thus causing irreversible gangrene. Consequently, her forearm as well as right arm was amputated. She began by settling the matter with the clinic and then proceeded to sue the manufacturer for negligence as well as strict liability in a court of law. In this, she alleged that the manufacturer failed to provide critical information regarding the negative implications associated with the IV push administration method. A judge overseeing this case ruled in favor of the complainant. This decision was further affirmed by the supreme court of Vermont. In this case, Levine argued that the information provided by the label did not address the effects of the IV push methodology. Although it placed great emphasis on the relative gangrene risk that could stem from an inadvertent intra-arterial injection, the respective label did not offer any information regarding the concept of IV push. Further, it did not provide any information related to the prohibition of this method og administration. Levineââ¬â¢s insisted that the company had the responsibility of providing this important information by labeling the drug through ââ¬ËChanges Being Effectedââ¬â¢ provisions. These according to Constance and Savage all drug manufacturers to add any new safety related information to a

Language2 - Essay Example They also end up relegating themselves to only living and socializing in areas where their neighbors speak their native language. U.S. immigrants, who do not speak English, have to master the language to compete for equal choices in work and living. Young students who do not speak English at home are at a disadvantage in American schools. They have to face the dual task of understanding the language, as well as following the curriculum. This adds an extra burden on them compared to their classmates who speak English as their first language. As a result, these students are not able to do well in their studies and lag behind their English speaking class fellows. While it is true that there are few international private schools that do teach in native languages, they are not always located at a convenient distance. Many parents are also unable to afford the tuition fee for private schools. The parents now realize that they have to teach English to their children otherwise they will be left out of the mainstream. This is why they are increasingly admitting them in special programs in schools which teach English as a new language. For many non-native adults in academia, expressing themselves well in writing or in oral communication is a difficult step. These adult scholars in higher education receive less attention as their teacher has to make the extra effort to overlook their limited skills in English expression to appreciate the gist of their papers, research or presentation. They are not able to communicate well. Teachers then need to have more patience and neutrality when speaking with these students. However, not all teachers have that extra patience. In addition, non-English speakers in academia also face problems in presentations as they may not be able to find appropriate words to fully convey what they have in mind. This can result in the audience losing interest in their presentation and can potentially have an effect on their grades. So, is

Microcredit Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Microcredit - Term Paper Example The description of the ways in which access to credit eradicates poverty is also discussed in this paper basing the argument on empirical studies. Usman, Malik and Shafiq (2011) explain that regular banks are generally meant for people with money and thus microfinance becomes very necessary for the millions of poor people across the world. Microcredit institutions offer the small financial loans in form of microcredit to the poor with a premise that these people have financial skills and talents which can be utilized through financing for their own benefit and the society in general. According to Vasanthakumari (2008, p. 137), microcredit is necessary for the poor because it offers them the chance to utilize their capabilities and hence progress both economically and socially. Because dependency on charity only sustains poverty, microfinance becomes necessary to enable the poor to utilize their creativity and potential which is possible if peopleââ¬â¢s energy is concentrated on bu siness ventures and self development as described by Sin-Yu and Odhiambo (2011, p. 103). Microcredit is described by Madichie and Nkamnebe (2010, p. 301) as a form of finance that provides small loans to poor people which allows them to have an ability of self employment. According to Ghosh and Wright (2005, p. 298), microcredit targets poor people who need it to begin businesses and as a result it charges low interest rates as compared to the regular banking services. The Muhammad Yunus and Grameen Bank are credited for the introduction of microcredit as an economic innovation which targets poor people with an aim of empowering them and thus lead to a general development of the social systems. As a result of this innovation, Muhammad Yunus and Grameen Bank received a Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 because microfinance led to the empowerment of poor entrepreneurs, farmers and the unemployed. Durrani, Usman, Malik and Ahmad (2011, p. 138) illustrate that microcredit targets people in the unstable income bracket due to unemployment. Because poor people fail to meet the minimum financial qualification of regular banks before they acquire credit services, microfinance plays a significant in the economic progress of the poor. Poorer People Need Microcredit Lack of credit is attributed to the inability of the poor to progress economically and become wealthy as said by Haque and Harbin (2009, p. 4). Microcredit is therefore the best financial solution to the increased poverty especially in developing nations. The credit market within regular banks is full of imperfections and therefore microcredit acts to combat the problems related to the acquisition of credit from banks such as high collateral requirement. Sharma (2005, p. 288) explains that the difficulty of acquiring a loan from formal credit markets makes poor people to resolve into borrowing money from informal credit markets where they are vulnerable to exploitation. In the informal credit market, moneylenders give loans to the poor who have limited options and exploit them through charging exaggerated interest rates. In the developing economies, money lenders provide alternative credit services to the poor because the regular banks require very high financial qualifications for loans which the poor cannot attain. The role of microfinance in the eradication of poverty is therefore evident through the
The Importance of I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings Essay
The Importance of I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings - Essay Example Angelou at first made a decision to create the autobiography because very few had been published for young African American girls in America. She aimed to show to her fellow people that in spite of the hindrances and the miseries they suffered, there was an overflowing wit and love to be felt and experienced in the African American society (Elliot 1989). Certainly, the narrative has a quite definite importance for young African American girls. This essay will attempt to provide an account of the importance of Maya Angelouââ¬â¢s highly celebrated autobiography. Oprah Winfrey, in her interview with Angelou in 1993, explained how significant the story was to her because she was able to see her own experience in the narrative (Megna-Wallace 1998). However, in spite of her novel objectives, Angelou discovered that when she started writing the narrative her audience and thoughts transformed (Megna-Wallace 1998): ââ¬Å"I saw it was not just for black girls but for young Jewish boys and old Chinese womenâ⬠(p. xii). The fame of the autobiography survives not merely because it keeps on being instructive on subjects of gender and race, but also due to its complete story of survival. This importance of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings deals with the general and specific components of the autobiography of Angelou. It starts with an emphasis on the literary components of the narrative: its main themes, setting, plot, genre, perspective, and others. This literary importance sketches the journey of Angelou from a timid, anxious, and lonely girl to an adolescent who endures countless frustrations and pains and becomes known as a self-sufficient and confident young woman. The importance of the narrative involves particular topics raised by the story and the specific historical event it depicts. An importance such as this presupposes that a literary piece like I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is a vibrant tale of not only a single

Critical Review of The literature. Honey dressing versus paraffin Essay
Critical Review of The literature. Honey dressing versus paraffin tulle gras following toenail surgery - Essay Example Honey has been a well known alternative medicine all around the globe. Ever since the beginning of early informal medicine, Honey has already been recognized in connection with its healing capabilities and the fact that it has certain characteristics which provides a certain level of ease especially when it comes to healing wounds. The elements making up honey have been found to be one of the strongest substances that could easily heal wounds and rather tone down the effects of infection or possible problems that may occur during the recovery period. On the other hand, a paraffin tulle gras dressing is known for its capability to stop bleeding and aid in the process of helping blood coagulate to protect an open wound. Having a soothing feel due to the existence of air holes that allow air to pass through the dressing and become a natural aid of healing, this dressing had been repeatedly recognized in medicine as the most effective tool for wound recovery procedures. In a concise presentation, it could be said that this introduction was comprehensive enough to provide a good sense of what the research is going to be about and how it is actually about to take the proper picture of what the study is all about. This introduction suffices the need of the primary information that the readers require of. As mentioned by Farina, ââ¬Å"a concise discussion of the different elements makes a research more effective than that of the introduction of the different factors considered in the study through the use of a lengthy description of the entire researchâ⬠(33). In the study being analyzed herein, the comparison between paraffin tulle grass and that of the honey dressing shall be seen. Through identifying the different elemental factors used by the researchers of the study and seeing how much they have fared in the process of examining the matter concerned. This critical analysis is expected to provide a better sense of what the study is all about and how it
Direct Marketing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Direct Marketing - Essay Example It is a system of interactive marketing which is aimed at maintaining and building long term relationships with customers through the products and services offerings (Koekemoer & Bird, 2004, p.332). On the other hand, mass marketing aims to target the total market without emphasising on specific market segments. In such a case, the marketer believes that the entire market would be satisfied through the single product offering. The product is offered in the market with minimum or completely no variation in the marketing. It includes a single price, one single promotional campaign targeting the entire market and also a single method of distribution (Strydom, 2001, p.61). This is a relatively less costly affair which includes only a single standard package using one promotional message. Some of the common differences between the two are discussed as follows. The traditional advantages associated with mass marketing are that the production costs remains low because of a single production run for a product which is homogeneous in nature. The advertising cost also remains low because of the launch of a single campaign. It also does not require extensive market research which is why the cost associated with market research also remains low (Strydom, 2001, p.62). ... It is said that the strategies for direct marketing must be in alignment and should be guided by the marketing strategy of the organisation on the whole. It shows the way in which the customers can be reached on a one to one basis. This includes determining the product strategies, setting the price and arranging for the distribution. The L. L. Bean Inc. targets the outdoor apparel niche by the use of catalogue marketing. Many companies have used direct marketing to communicate with the target market. For example, Dell Inc. employs sales contact directly with the business customers, internet sales and telephone sales (Cravens, 2009, 377). Dell Inc. is also said to be using the internet for providing customers with the necessary information prior to taking an order over the telephone. The following paragraph discusses some of the common features of both forms of marketing. In term of the costs involved, direct marketing is said to be less costly as compared to mass marketing because it targets less number of people and is carefully aimed at a selected few. It would be more applicable for businesses which have a small or medium target market and which has string prospects. For example, the TV home shopping channels, like Home Shopping network is one the modes of direct marketing (Kennedy, 2006, p.3). In other words, direct marketing involves an one to one customer relationship on the basis of personalized communications (Stone & Jacobs, 2007, p.10). Another basic difference between the two is that direct marketing has a greater conversion rate than mass marketing. It is likely to be surer of converting the first person it targets before moving to its next target. Also,

How Cura Personalis Relates to the Practice of Pharmacy Essay
How Cura Personalis Relates to the Practice of Pharmacy - Essay Example The researcher states that through reflection upon various incidences in his life and that of others, the author has experienced God's presence. For instance, the researcher once got out from a fatal accident alive, and that encounter made him realize that God still had more plans for the author. That experience will always give him the motivation to care for his patient deeply as brothers and sisters in Christ. Being Gods children created in His image and likeness, we have the potential to tap that power and implement it for the good of ourselves and others. The author will, therefore, always strive to commit himself to do and give the best he can for the greater good of every person at his service. For effective treatment recovery of all patients, personal care is essential. Ignatius values have taught me to care and show concern for the whole person without discrimination. The researcher will, therefore, respect human dignity always and treat everyone equally without considering r eligious affiliation believing that we are all children of God. The Cura Personalis will also help the author to treat his patientsââ¬â¢ body, mind, and spirit, thus, treating the whole person because these three are connected. When dealing with patients, the researcher will not always view it as dealing with a condition or disease but rather be compassionate about their situation and lives. As a result, he will always make right decisions and prescribe the best treatment. The authorââ¬â¢s empathetic nature will compliment this value to help him connect with the patients and show them that he cares about their best. At critical moments, faith and believe in God will always keep the author moving forward to offer the best services even when people have given hope. Believing that God calls and we are only there to respond requires faith and trust in Him, the institution has inculcated this value into the authorââ¬â¢s life by bringing God closer to their classroom every time. Prayers before everything will, therefore, keep him strong in faith, thus, tackling whatever situation that prevails with confidence and trust in God.
Organ sale Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Organ sale - Essay Example It is time the government legalized the sale of organs. Legalization of organ sales will lower vital organs-related deaths boosting the supply of such organs, eliminating illicit organ markets, allowing access to cheaper organ transplant, and compensate donors, as revealed from the Iranian system of organ transplantation. The demand for organs is overwhelming, and yet the supply is far more muted. Right now, over 85,000 people in U.S. alone are on the list of those waiting for organs (Calandrillo 72). Out of these, a majority (about 60,000) requires a kidney, 17,000 are in desperate need of a liver, 4,000 are hoping for a lung while 3,500 are desperate for a heart. The organs are the most important for the survival of any human being. Any defect in them can shorten a personââ¬â¢s life within a short period. The patients on the waitlist thus urgently need them as they are living on borrowed time. However, the supply of these organs is shockingly far much less. Calandrillo says that the year 2003 saw organs harvest from only 13,000 individuals to facilitate the mere 25,000 transplants in the U.S. (72). It means that the many patients who were not successful to get a required organ sadly died. Ironically, the painful shortage is because a majority of the organs goes to the grave when the owners die. A lack of donation-appropriate organs is not a primary cause. A bumper sticker once read, ââ¬Å"Please do not take your organs with you to heaven. Heaven understands that we are desperate for them here on the earthâ⬠(The Economist). Each year witnesses many Americans die in ways that would make it possible for an organ harvest. For example, some die in road accidents, others due to heart attacks and strokes, but organs come from only a few of the possible donors. In fact, about 75% of the Americans are not ready to donate organ upon their death. Hence, the remaining percentage that have opted to offer an

Business law case study questions Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Business law questions - Case Study Example Thus under the general notion, the company is liable for its debts and not the shareholders. (Ridley 2011) The landmark decision in respect of company incorporation was of Salomon v Salomon ([1897] AC 22) where Mr. Salomon, formed a company which included his wife, five children and himself (so as to fulfill requirements of shareholders as per the Companies Act prevailing at that time). He went on to purchase the sole trading business which was operated by him albeit overvaluing the business, but that too because of his confidence in the business. The company went into liquidation and the liquidator evaluated that the company was a sham and was an agent of Salomon and conclusion was that he should be held personally liable to the debts of the company. The House of Lords reversing the decision of the Court of Appeal observed that it was reasonable if shareholders held shares merely to fulfill technical requirements and so the procedure of setting up a business could be used by any per son and if so done it would be a separate legal entity. The current Companies Act 2006 (s.7) allows a company to be formed by a single person. The next decision that was made by the House of Lords was Macaura v Northern Assurance Co. ([1925] AC 619) the court went on to say that under corporate personality assets belong to the company (Dignam et al 2012). The courts have scrutinized the concept of separate legal entity by lifting the veil of incorporation, whereby rights and liabilities of company and shareholders are treated as the same thereby removing the concept of limited liability as a result of which the shareholders are held liable for the acts of the company. This is known as lifting the veil, which is done mainly where the company is found to be a ââ¬Å"shamâ⬠or ââ¬Å"fraudâ⬠. The current position in respect of lifting the veil is that of Adams v Cape Industries plc where it was held that the veil would be lifted only if the company is created with the intent or purpose of fraud or where the reason was for avoidance of an existing obligation. (Dignam et al 2012) In respect of the position of McDaid Development (Ireland) Ltd and its shareholder, it is important to note that McDaid is a private limited company and has one shareholder who owns all the shares. Under the Companies Act 2006, a single person can also set up a company. The benefit that the shareholder would derive from the company is that of limited liability which means liability would be limited to the extent of unpaid shares and the shareholder would not be held accountable for the losses that have been incurred by McDaid Development (Ireland) Ltd. Q2. The Companies Act 2006 prescribes several duties on company directors. Discuss the general duties of directors according to the law. Analyze and discuss the duties breached by Peter McDaid as the managing director of McDaid Developments (Ireland) Ltd. In accordance with the provisions of section 171 of the Companies Act 2006, t he directors must act within powers and to exercise them for a proper purpose. If a director breaches the same such breach is generally considered to be a breach of the directorââ¬â¢s duty to act in good faith. Difficulties have arisen when the directors act in good faith but not for a proper purpose. In the decision of the Privy Council in Howard Smith Ltd. v.
